Free Online Geography Games on Real Maps
▶ Play Memory RouteMapDice has four free geography games played on real maps of real cities. Instead of answering quiz questions, you move through actual streets: you race along them, escape chasers through them, remember routes across them or claim land on the world map. Everything runs in the browser, with no download and no account.
What makes a map-based geography game different?
Most geography games test what you already know: flags, capitals, or where a photo was taken. Map-based games teach by doing. When the board is a real city, every move shows you how its streets connect, where its parks and squares are, and how far one district is from another. You come away knowing a place a little better, without studying it.
Which geography games can I play on real maps?
Memory Route is the most geographic of the four: you watch a route light up through real streets, then drive it from memory — left, straight or right — to a famous place. Rounds grow one turn at a time, and a wrong turn just sends your car back to the start of the round.
MapMan is an arcade chase in which every street is a corridor of the maze. You eat dots along real streets, grab power-ups in parks and squares, and run from the cops or ghosts hunting you.
MapDice is a Ludo-style board game on city streets: roll two dice, and the total becomes real road distance for one of your four characters. Choosing the road at each intersection is the strategy.
Empire Tap is a real-time strategy game on the world map: you found a capital on a real place, grow it, and siege the empires next door.
Like GeoGuessr? Try moving through the map instead
Games in the style of GeoGuessr drop you somewhere and ask you to guess where you are. These games work the other way round: you know the city, and the challenge is to find your way through it. They make a good change of pace for geography fans, and Memory Route's daily city — the same for everyone — turns it into a daily habit you can compare with friends.
Can I use them at school or with children?
Yes. The games need no account and run on any phone, tablet or computer, so they are easy to open in a class or at home. Start MapDice or MapMan in your own town, or play Memory Route's daily city together and talk about where it is in the world. Every game is free.
